Hot on the heels from their previous release of the new Canon EOS R range cameras, they decided to announce yet another new camera to the range with the Canon EOS RP. When questioned about the naming convention of the camera, Andrew Koh, the President and CEO of Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd mentioned: “We hope that the EOS RP will enable more users to experience the benefits of a full-frame mirrorless camera, as an acknowledgement to one of Canon’s historic ground-breaking camera “Type-P” which was a big hit in the 1960 and inspired by the French word ‘Populaire’”.
However, we do believe that the P in RP could also mean “Pocket” as the camera is one of the lightest cameras that Canon has created, weighing at just 485grams. Enabling the user to effortlessly handle the camera even with a single hand without being weighed down, and all packaged in a full-frame body. Speaking of handling, the camera is built with a Vari-angle LCD screen that allows the user to take photos from different angles for unique frames. If you are not a fan of LCD displays, the EVF provides 100% coverage with its 2.35million dots OLED display. For those with bigger hands, you can even equip the camera with the Extension Grip (EG-E1) that is available separately for firmer handling.
Following the EOS R System introduced previously, the EOS RP also sports an RF lens mount that comes with a short flange focal distance of 20mm. Owners of the existing EF and EF-S lenses can also utilise them with a simple mount adapter. Under the hood, the camera is powered with a DIGIC 8 Image Processor along with a 26.2-megapixel Full-Frame CMOS sensor and a native ISO range of 100-40,000 that can be extended to 500-102,400. Taking pictures in low-light conditions will be of no issue as the camera also has an Auto Lighting Optimiser feature that will balance the brightest and darkest points to accentuate the details of the images you take.
The camera is also super fast when taking pictures with its autofocus speed of just 0.05 seconds, and with 4,779 AF points and Eye Detection AF, you can easily take pictures of your subject or environment without worrying that they will be out of focus. Shooting videos in 4K are of no issue as well, as it can record in 4K Ultra HD at 24p/25p. When you’re done taking pictures, transferring images to your smart device or computer is as-easy-as-ABC using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Aside from the new EOS RP camera, Canon also announced six new RF lenses to complement the EOS R family for 2019. Currently, the Canon EOS RP camera comes in two packages. One with only the body, and one with a lens kit. The Canon EOS RP (body only) is priced at RM5,999 while the Canon EOS RP + RF24-105mm f/4L IS USM Kit Lens is priced at RM10,999. The camera can be purchased come March 2019.
