En-JOI A Larger View

JOI had few new products introduced at the tail end of 2018, and the JOI 11 PRO is one of them. Out of the box, the 11 PRO is a tablet that runs on Windows 10 S, an operating system that could be a benefit for some or an annoyance to others. While Windows 10 S allows for faster booting and overall increased security, not being able to install apps willy-nilly from sites that you frequent irked us a little.

As mentioned, Windows 10 S disables the ability to run apps downloaded from your browser, and your only access to apps or games are via the Windows Store that are certified to be safe by Microsoft. In S Mode, you are also not able to run commands like PowerShell and so on. We even tried to remove S Mode, but the tablet did not allow us to do so.

Decent amount of ports

Decent amount of ports

That aside, the tablet does feature a large 10.8-inch display that is touch capable, a healthy amount of ports with its mini HDMI, micro USB, microSD slot and USB Type-C. The Type-C port will usually be used to charge the device, and it is packaged with a micro USB to USB converter in the box as well, allowing you to plug in an additional device like your external drive. It also has a camera on both sides, so you can take pictures or selfies without much hassle. The version we got our hands on is the 64GB version, and with that you can store more pictures, videos, and games.

You can use a 128GB microSD card to bump up the storage capacity. However, we found some of the ports to be on the flimsier side. It could just be the luck of the draw, but we found the microSD port slightly wonky. Of course, it still worked perfectly fine.

The tablet performs well on its own, with Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Store offering most of what you’ll need out of a tablet. Due to its large size, holding the tablet with one hand will be a challenge, and this is where the additional accessories come in. You can purchase a JOI Active Pen and JOI Leather Keyboard to complement the JOI 11 PRO.

The Active Pen allows for creatives to do their work on the tablet with relative ease. All you need is a AAA battery to power the pen to work with the tablet. As for the Leather Keyboard, it is a keyboard with a leather cover that you attach to the bottom of the tablet to turn it into a fully functioning 2-in-1 device. The leather keyboard also packs a tiny trackpad that works like a charm, but most of the time you’ll be better off with using the touch controls.

The JOI 11 PRO is a decent machine on its on and we didn’t have much qualms aside from choice of using Windows 10 S. But if security is a major concern of yours, then this is a good pick. With the addition of accessories, you could easily transform the tablet into a 2-in-1.

CHIP CONCLUDE: A tablet with a large display allows for easier media consumption, but it running Windows 10 S complicates regular app installations, in return for added security.
