The Lean Mean Gaming Machine

What makes a gaming laptop a gaming laptop, with so many brands out and about flinging the word gaming all over the place? You start to wonder if it is just a blanket term everyone is using for the sake of marketing, or if they are really looking to provide the best gaming experience. We all love to game, love our mobile devices, and love to game on our mobile devices. But we all know we need something more hardcore than our phones.

This is why we get gaming laptops – we want to carry our League of Legends, DotA2, Overwatch and Witcher 3’s everywhere we go. Why wouldn’t we, when we’re so in love with gaming? Now with MSI’s GS65 Stealth Thin, you can do just that. This ultraportable 15.6-inch laptop sports a 4.9mm ultra-thin bezel for a satisfying 82% screen-to-body ratio, but is the GS65 a gaming laptop as it claims to be?

For one, it has an Intel Core i7-8750H, considered one of the higher performing Coffee Lake processor for laptops. Then it also has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 discrete graphics on it. While this means that a performance cap is placed on the graphics card to reduce heat production, it allows more powerful cards like the 1070 to be installed into thinner laptops. At the same time, this also means less performance even though on paper it’s still a GTX 1070.

To beautifully display all the action rendered by the previously mentioned hardware, it has a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display. Throw in a refresh rate of 144Hz and you get a display that smoothly projects the games you play. With a capped GTX 1070, it isn’t really possible to play demanding games at 144fps consistently unless you lower the graphic settings. But we tested it using Overwatch, which hits the 144fps mark rather easily even at higher settings.

So does the GS65 fit the bill of a gaming laptop? In our opinion, yes it does. Although capped, it has a strong graphics card, a good processor, decent amounts of RAM, fast storage, 144Hz display and nice tactile keyboard by SteelSeries.

CHIP CONCLUDE: Has the ability to take on the gamers it was targeted to. This is a great secondary laptop for hardcore gamers who want to max out settings, or a great desktop replacement for the casual gamers who are ready to game on the go.
