Microsoft Begins Automatic Updates for Windows 10 Version 1909

Microsoft has started the automatic rollout of Windows 10 version 1909, or November 2019 Update, to devices running Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809).

Devices running Home and Pro versions of the operating system will start seeing the update to version 1909 in Windows Update. The update will be initiated automatically, as Microsoft wants to make sure that as many systems as possible are updated to the latest release ahead of the end-of-support date for the November update.

“Beginning today, we will slowly start the phased process to automatically initiate a feature update for devices running the October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809) Home and Pro editions, keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health,” Microsoft explains.

“We are starting this rollout process several months in advance of the end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process.”

Windows 10 upgrade blocks

Windows 10 version 1909 is also available for seekers, which means that users who manually check for updates in Windows Update should be offered the update.

However, Microsoft has put several upgrade blocks in place as certain compatibility issues need to be resolved before everyone gets the update.

If you don’t see the update in Windows Update, there’s a chance that a compatibility block targets your device, in which case you are not recommended to install Windows 10 version 1909 using other methods. These include the standalone Windows 10 version 1909 ISOs and the Media Creation Tool, which lets users create bootable media for upgrading other devices to the latest version.

The automatic rollout of Windows 10 version 1909 will continue in the coming weeks and months, so expect more devices to start getting the update without the need for a manual check for updates.
