In addition to the new cumulative updates for Windows 10, Microsoft has also released a set of new monthly rollups for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on October 8 as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle.

Obviously, the focus is on security improvements given the Patch Tuesday release date, but other bug fixes are included as well.

On Windows 7, you get monthly rollup KB4519976 and security-only update KB4520003.

First and foremost, the monthly rollup includes an Internet Explorer patch, following the zero-day fixes that the company shipped in late September. The company explains in the release notes of the update:

“Addresses an issue that may fail to disable VBScript in Internet Explorer by default after installing KB4507437 (Preview of Monthly Rollup) or KB4511872 (Internet Explorer Cumulative Update) and later.”

Additionally, this update fixes a printing bug that also existed on Windows 10 and which broke down printers and apps using the Windows JavaScript engine to process print jobs.

Needless to say, there are security improvements targeting the Windows Authentication component, Windows Kernel, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and the Microsoft JET Database engine. All these patches are included in the security-only update as well.

Windows 8.1 updates

Windows 8.1 devices are provided with monthly rollup KB4520005 and security-only update KB4519990.

The changelog is pretty much the same as for the Windows 7 monthly rollup, minus the Internet Explorer patch. So you still get the printer patch, as well as all the security fixes mentioned above.

The Windows 8.1 security patches also include improvements for Windows Cryptography and Windows Storage and Filesystems.

All updates are available via Windows Update, but they can also be downloaded manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog. For enterprises, the updates are also delivered via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
